All Things University: Christmas on a Budget

Celebrating Christmas at University can be an expensive time of year for many, especially in previous years where universities would host many Christmas events and nights out. This year is slightly different and at a time of uncertainty, large spending sprees aren't the best idea. In today's post, I want to go through things you can do with friends and flatmates to celebrate Christmas before going home. I want to cover a range of things both online and in-person, something to suit whatever the new regulations will be once we come out of lockdown.

Netflix Party Night

Get yourself cosy with a hot chocolate and popcorn because here you have the perfect opportunity to watch a Christmas film with your friends, Netflix party is a free downloadable google chrome extension that allows you to sync Netflix screens with your friends. You will need a Netflix subscription to access this, but if you're only planning on using it for one evening you'll be able to get a free trial. Some of my personal favourites are; Christmas with the Kranks, Bad Moms: Christmas Special and, Jack Whitehall: Christmas with my Father.

Secret Santa

Between your group of friends or family, you could do a Secret Santa gift exchange, set yourself a budget, not too high, maybe around the £5 marker. If you're unable to physically see the person you're gifting you can always post this and spread the festive cheer via mail. Some ideas include; chocolate, sweets and pamper night essentials.

Flat Christmas Dinner

If you get along with most of your flat you could have your own Christmas Day, making your own festive meal and sharing all your festive traditions. This doesn't have to be as extravagant as the meal you'd normally have at home and you can easily do this on a budget by splitting the ingredients equally. If one person wants to get the meat (or alternative) then someone else could do veg/potatoes and someone else could do trimmings.

Christmas Quiz

The perfect evening on Zoom, get your brain working to test yourself at the year's general knowledge and quirky questions. You could designate one person as quizmaster and get them to write the questions or find a pre-made one online so you can all take part. Give yourself a variety of rounds, some visual, some verbal.

Wreath Making

One of my personal favourites, I've wanted to do this for years and finally did it with my housemate the other evening. We bought an artificial wreath from Poundland then picked up some decorations from Wilko. It was so easy to do and has made our bedroom doors look all festive!
