All thing's University: Making Friends

Making friends at university can be quite daunting, being faced with people from all around the world, different backgrounds and different lifestyles. But when starting university, it is key to remember that everyone is in the same situation, everyone wants to meet new people and find the people that click with.

There are different environments where you can start to make friends, all at different times within the university process...

  • Applicant Stage - this consists of meeting people at open days, summer schools and applicant days. At this stage, many people want to make new friends but are worried that they'll end up drifting apart and may end up going to different universities. From my experience, I went to the Royal Holloway Humanities Summer School in 2018 and ended up meeting people I'm friends with now. Two years down the line I'm at uni with some of these same people, it's so important to make the most of every opportunity to meet new people.
  • Offer Holding Stage - at the time I'm uploading this, we are currently at this stage. There are many group chats beginning to form, both on Facebook and Whatsapp, I've spoken to a few prospective Royal Holloway students about their upcoming transition into further education. These group chats give students the ability to meet other students on the same course or accommodation block.
  • Move-In Stage - Beginning in early September, when you move into your halls (for those that are moving) you'll be able to meet the people in your flat, block and nearby buildings. At Royal Holloway, we have a hall life team that organise move-in events for new students to get to know each other. As mentioned in my last post, a doorstop is such a handy thing to bring with you, it means you can have your door open whilst you unpack and can pop out and say hello to people as they begin to move in too.
  • Freshers Week Stage - probably one of the most exciting but daunting stages, because you'll be able to meet people from the whole uni. In my experience, some of the people I met during freshers week are some of my closest friends now. But then there's also the people I met that I barely ever speak to. It's important to remember that not every person you meet during freshers will end up being a friend for life, they could just be someone you only ever see on nights out.
  • Lecture Stage - One of the most crucial stages seeing as the people you meet on your course will be the people around you for the duration of your degree (at least for your core modules).

I'm a year into my degree and there's still always opportunities to meet new people, for prospective Royal Holloway students, I'll be at freshers week events like many other current students. There are no barriers between year groups, I have friends in all year groups so don't feel like you can only get to know people in your own year.

As you get further into first term and you get more work, you'll probably start to go out less and start to settle down a bit more, then you can have nights in with friends, whether it's watching a movie, making some cakes or ordering your favourite takeaway.
