Lockdown has been the perfect opportunity for people to identify areas of their homes that could do with some TLC. In today's post, I want to go through this years top home decor trends and show you how you can achieve them on a budget. The cover photo shows the new craze of silhouette vases, that many people place either candles or dried flowers in. Perfect throughout your home and affordable to purchase.
Indoor Plants
Indoor trees and plants are going to continue their ascent into home design mainstay. They freshen indoor air, bring the clarity and calm of nature indoors, act like sculpture on a shelf or table top, and caring for them is grounding and life affirming. Developing a collection of interior plants wins on all levels: Aesthetic, functional and mental.
Some of the most affordable indoor plants include...
- Aloe Vera (part of the succulent family) is a low maintenance and affordable option if you’re on a budget. The awesome thing about this plant is that it’s easy to grow, as long as it gets some sunlight everyday it will be fine. Even if you forget to water it for a while, that’s probably not going to be an issue as you only need to ensure it’s watered approximately once every 3 weeks.
- Golden Pothos is one of the best for new plant parents, some people say it’s almost impossible to kill. This plant has fantastic air purification properties, it was featured in the NASA Air purification study. It can cope with some neglect, you only need to water it once the soil is dry to the touch. A good indication of its health is the colour of the leaves, more golden tones will develop if it’s healthy.
- The Money Tree, a beautiful braided plant, if only money did grow! If it’s an indoor tree you’re after then this is one of the cheapest you can get. The funky braided trunk is what makes it a popular choice for plant lovers, but that’s not the only quirk. In China, it’s a holy tree that’s supposed to bring people fortune and luck, along with being a symbol of affluence. It’s quite a needy plant though, it will require a warm, moderately humid environment for it to truly thrive. On the flip side you don’t have to water it too often, but ensure that you keep it in a bright area but out of direct sunlight.
Etsy and local garden centres can be a great place to look for indoor plants at a reasonable price!
Decorative Smart Lighting
As we start the new year, people will look for ways to make their home a comfortable and functional living space. For instance, swapping out regular incandescent bulbs for smart lighting options allow you to set schedules and create an ambience to fit your needs – whether that’s zoom classes, cooking prep for a family gathering, or just relaxing in the living room.
Although they may appear to be on the pricer side, the Phillips Hue Smart lighting system is said to be one of the most efficient lighting systems on the market. Control extends to brightness, colour and timing - you can set your lights to come on at preset times, or when you approach or leave the home, and even entirely remotely over the internet when you're miles away. The Phillips Hue system also connects to the Amazon Alexa to control your lights with only your voice.
Amazon is a great place to start looking for smart lighting systems!
Durable Fabrics
Fabrics that are durable, wear well, and can be washed multiple times (linens and slipcovers, for instance) will be more important as we spend more time at home for work and learning.
In terms of bedding, linen is the way forward with it being most durable wash after wash. Some great linen sets in neutral colours can be found on sites such as John Lewis, Dunelm and H&M Home. The White Company have a beautiful range of bedding if you're looking to splurge a bit more.
Slip covers for sofas can not only be a great way of recovering an old sofa, but the also offer a source of protection and are easy to wash. Wayfair has a huge variety of different shapes and designs to suit your living space.
Blush
Millennials may have named the color, but for this designer, blush tones are now considered a neutral. I expect to see more of this in 2021 in spaces that used to be reserved for white paint only.
There are many ways you can introduce a pop of colour like blush into your home, one of my favourite ways is through a velour chair. This can be a great addition to any room and stores like Homebase and Homesense can have some great examples. Simpler ways include soft furnishings like a rug or a throw!
Stay Safe xx
