Dissertation Diaries: June - September 2022

The summer months have been a perfect opportunity to unwind and relax after a busy academic year, hence why I've combined the last few months posts together. In terms of dissertation prep, I haven't done a huge amount because I made sure I was ahead of schedule in April and May. I've spent this time working, spending time with friends and family and enjoying some free time before the return of academic deadlines in the autumn.

One crucial update is that I met with my personal tutor to discuss the next steps for planning my dissertation. We've agreed that the focus is to develop a core reading list and annotated bibliography. As a result of this, I have been in touch with the library team at Royal Holloway to begin finding appropriate sources. Collating the perfect reading list underpins the foundations of my research project allowing me to reference other credible researchers within my field. Due to the unique and specific nature of my research project it was initially difficult to find directly relevant sources. I found this in a way to be a positive because it shows that there is a 'gap in the market' for research within this area. My personal tutor has since emailed me with potential ideas to explore in greater detail. During our initial meeting we spoke about the importance of taking care of yourself and allowing yourself to have a break, hence the pause in uploads over the recent months.

To give a brief life update (I will be doing a full post on this) I have spent the last few months in a transition period from living uni life alongside my friends to moving out into my own flat. I wanted to use the summer as a final opportunity to spend time with those that I have spent the last three years making memories with. I'm sure some of you will remember Delilah, we have done a post together before, she and I went to Community Festival together, celebrated her graduation, and eventually moved out of our house. I spent the end of August celebrating my 21st birthday in Los Angeles and Las Vegas. I feel like I needed to take these few months out to enjoy my summer with friends and family before settling back into my usual academic routine. I wanted to use this post as a reminder that it's okay to take a step back and do things for yourself, in fact you should be making an effort to do this especially during busy academic times.
