All Things University: New Academic Year - Time to Prepare

The start of the new academic term is fast approaching, so whether you're a returning or new student this post will help you prepare for the upcoming year. In today's post I want to share some of my top tips for getting back into the swing of academic life.

Try and get hold of reading lists in advance

Having access to your reading list ahead of the start of term can be an absolute lifesaver. It gives you the time to go through each piece of reading at your own pace and develop your understanding in a stress free environment.

Stock up on academic supplies

Making sure you're prepared for the new term means more than just getting your reading done, you need to make sure you're fully equipped with all the necessary supplies. I love to have an academic diary, pastel highlighters and coloured pens. These are just a few things that I purchase every year in time for the new term. I would highly recommend Papier for all academic diaries and stationary supplies, there are some student discount codes available as well.

Find a time management method that works for you

This relates to my point about finding a good diary or planner because time management is something you'll soon become a pro at! Time management doesn't just mean being able to complete your university work on time, it represents a huge part of your well-being whilst at university. Make sure to leave some time to practice self-care and take some time to do things that you enjoy. Life should be about balance, do some reading and then go for a walk. The last 18 months have shown how much getting outdoors can positively impact your mental health.

Find a suitable member of staff to answer any questions

Usually you will be given a personal tutor as a point of contact for any of your concerns, but this person may not always be the member of staff that you feel most comfortable talking to. For me, I am incredibly lucky to have such a supportive and proactive personal tutor that I can raise any issues with. Being able to reach out to a member of academic staff can be immensely helpful. Your peers can also be a fantastic support network.

Do some prior research on upcoming modules

Look into what you'll be studying in the first term, read the syllabus so you have an understanding of what lecturers want to see in your assignments and what skills you can gain from taking that module. This gives you a chance to get ahead of your research ready for lectures and seminars.
