All Things University: Setting up your own Blog

During lockdown 3.0 many people are looking to take up a new hobby and start a blog can be the perfect activity to fill some of your spare time. In today's post, I want to go through my top tips on how to start your own blog as simple as possible. I've found that so many people overcomplicate it to the point where blog writing becomes unattainable and unenjoyable.

Think about what you want to talk about

Before you start the process of building and customising your blog you need to think about what you can talk about because it needs to be something that encourages consistency. There are so many people starting blogs every day so you need to identify your niche, what will make your blog stand out from other peoples. My blog started out as 'Katie Summer's Fashion' because I was interested in and worked in the luxury fashion industry. I reported on all the fashion week events that I attended, then started branching into high-street fashion, something that was more realistic for my readership demographic. Then finishing off at lifestyle and university tips. You have to talk about things you're passionate about otherwise you will easily lose interest in creating content.

Find a suitable platform to host your blog

Finding a suitable host will have a huge impact on the overall aesthetic and quality of your blog, personally, I use Blogger because I found it easy to use and I'd had experience using it from when I was at school. However, there are now many options for platforms you can decide to host with such as; WordPress, Wix, Go Daddy and Squarespace. Most platforms will give you the opportunity to use a premade template or to make and customise your own, this is something you can have a play around with until you find an option that suits you. I would also recommend looking online for tutorials on how other people got their blog style.

Understand that you won't be an overnight success

Blogging is something that takes time and consistency, it's highly unlikely that you'll become an overnight success. But you should be starting a blog because you love talking about specific subject areas, not because you think it'll land you freebies. Stay true yourself and work hard and readers will come to you, but also don't be disheartened if it takes a while for your readership to grow. The more readers you gain the more you need to be aware of your demographic because it'll help shape the content that you create.

Get into a routine

Getting into a good upload schedule maintains the consistency that's so crucial with running a blog. As you all know, I upload on Monday's and Friday's, these days fit in with my university schedule whilst giving me enough time to produce high-quality content. As I've mentioned many times before, consistency with uploading reassures readers that you're fully committed to blogging and have the desire and drive to write about things that interest you.

Don't be worried about what other people think

Your blog is your platform to fully express yourself, be yourself and you'll find so many likeminded readers!

Coronavirus is spreading, let's all play our part to keep our loved ones safe. Remember to observe social distancing guidelines, wear a mask and keep up to date with government legislation.

Stay Safe xx
